When next it is the library, not a salon or sitting room, they convene in, Mariam isn’t sure how that puzzle piece fits into the not-quite-emerging picture, but then, what she can tell is that Mr Lancaster is the indulged runt of this ‘litter’. Where he hardly said a line at at all when they were meeting last in Hartlepool, now he is the one asking most questions. That has rather elicited some fond looks from the others. He is the official scholar of the barony, but he appears to be going at any data gathering with the ardour of a scientist and the curiosity of a child. She can respect that. Worse, she can relate to it and rather enjoys it. Oh very well, she can play.

Well, tea would have been more proper, but that’s too late in the day. Gives that household too much time to prepare, and how is she to spot the cracks and strategic tidbits like that? No, she needs more to work with, and inviting herself over should set these strange people ablaze. She will have the upper hand despite walking into the lion’s den.

Her voice is too weak, she can’t call for Dandelion, but she knows where their tiniest puppy hid. Darcy is so grateful that Quincy can still hear her, can let John know. John would be so worried for their puppies if he couldn’t find all of them. But it was the best Darcy could do to keep them safe, let them out so they could run. She knows there was nothing accidental about Gregory pulling the rat cage down. That cage is taller than she is. It’s heavy. No, he did that to provoke her, punish her. She couldn’t let him hurt any more of her friends!
